LPG Has the Potential to Significantly Lower the CO2 Emissions

In October 2019, Liquid Gas Europe published a document on the vision of the autogas development – Vision of Autogas. The topics are focused on opportunities to promote the benefits of propane-butane.

The European LPG Association has warned that “even though the market share of alternative powered vehicles is increasing, over 90% of all new cars registered in 2018 ran on petrol and diesel.

The emissions from the transport sector represent about a quarter of total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the EU. Alternative solutions can significantly reduce emissions. Autogas is a clean, efficient, cost-effective and safe solution, which is available now. The European Union is, therefore, focusing its policies on promoting LPG widespread use.

Масовата употреба на автогаз ще намали значително вредните емисии

The vision of the European LPG Association for the results that can be achieved with the increased use of autogas focuses on the following projections:

  • Autogas is increasingly used in combination with an electric motor in hybrids, which offers the best of both worlds. In our scenario, a comparison of low and high EV uptake shows that LPG savings do not come at the expense of electromobility but actually
    complement it;
  • With the right policies in place, the total fleet of Autogas vehicles could reach a peak market share of 10.7% in 2040;
  • Higher LPG update leads to significant emissions reductions of harmful pollutants. The environmental and societal benefits
    equal to 18.7 billion euros in 2020 – 2050.

The European LPG Association calls for the establishment and enforcement of EU rules to accelerate the widespread use of propane-butane; to use strategies that include the ability to replace old cars with new ones with gas systems and to offer other benefits to autogas users. These are just some of the measures that can be taken.
