The hot air balloon festival (Canberra Balloon Spectacular) is an annual event where balloonists from all over Australia (and from around the world) gather to fly over Canberra. This year, the event takes place between March 9th and 17th and attracts a record number of visitors (over 40,000), who enjoy the balloon extravaganza or fly in one of the 40 balloons soaring in the city sky. How do all these balloons ascend and manoeuvre? With the help of propane-butane, of course! The burner in the balloon burns LPG to heat the air in the dome, and when the required temperature is reached, the balloon ascends. The pilot must operate the burner at certain intervals to maintain the desired altitude. Controlling the flight is fundamentally very easy: to ascend, we heat the air in the balloon more, and to descend, we let it cool down. To descend more quickly, the flap at the top of the dome can also be used, opening which releases some of the warm air.
