Frequently asked questions

What is propane - butane?

Propane-butane is the popular name for LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).

Propane-butane was first produced in 1910 by Dr. Walter Snellings, and the first commercial products containing propane-butane appeared in 1912.

Propane-butane is obtained during oil refining. It is gaseous at normal temperatures and atmospheric pressure, and is supplied liquefied under pressure (at a pressure of 8 atmospheres /at a temperature of 20-25°C/) in steel cylinders or tanks. The cylinders/tanks are filled to 85% of their capacity to allow for thermal expansion of the liquid contained therein. Propane-butane is heavier than air, so in the event of a leak, it collects in the lowest places, such as floors, shafts, basements, etc. This should be taken into account when working with propane-butane.

Propane-butane has more than 1,000 applications. It is widely used in industry and everyday life (heating, cooking, hot water), in transport as fuel for cars and gas trucks, in the chemical industry, in agriculture, in the meat processing and glass industries, in the manufacture of glass, ceramics, and plastics, in metal foundries and metal cutting, in waterproofing, in roasting nuts, in dry cleaning, in the restaurant industry, and in many other areas.

Propane-butane is a product of the processing of crude oil in refineries. It is transported by rail or tanker trucks. Natural gas is extracted directly from the bowels of the a the earth and is transported through pipes.

Propane-butane consists of propane and butane, while natural gas contains mainly methane and ethane. Propane-butane has a higher calorific value than natural gas.

V-GAS complies strictly with the requirements of the European standard 589, which defines the quality of propane-butane.
