The holiday season is in full swing, temperatures are already exceeding 35°C and becoming unbearable for most of us. While some seek refuge from the summer heat in the coolness of nature or near bodies of water, others look for ways to overcome the high temperatures during their daily work routine. Here are a few easy ways to beat the heat in an urban environment.
Start your day early and actively
During hot weather, it is difficult to motivate ourselves and keep our bodies energetic. If you force yourself to start your day an hour earlier, you can make the most of the cooler hours. Since physical exercise is key to overcoming feelings of fatigue, be sure to set aside time for exercise early in the morning.
Avoid public transport
Crowds and the lack of air conditioning in most public transport vehicles can raise temperatures and your nerves to boiling point. Use the mornings and evenings to cycle or walk along shaded routes. And, of course, always carry water with you.
Do not drink sweet, carbonated, or alcoholic beverages.
Do you think that ice-cold cider will refresh you on a hot summer day? Don’t be fooled, alcohol and sweet drinks dehydrate you and accelerate the harmful effects of the heat. If you do reach for a harmful drink, alternate it with a glass of water.
Wear light and comfortable shoes
Wearing closed and uncomfortable shoes can cause you to slip, especially when temperatures are high. When your feet are under stress and your body temperature rises, muscle spasms become more frequent, which in turn cause cramps and/or ligament injuries.
Use cold compresses
An easy way to cool down is to use ice packs on key areas of the body such as the neck and wrists. It is important not to apply ice directly to the skin as this can cause irritation.
