Following the official publication on November 28 of the European Commission’s communication on its vision for long-term greenhouse gas emission reductions in the EU, Liquid Gas Europe (the European LPG Association) announced its position in the document Liquid Gas Europe’s Position Paper on the Strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

The Association makes recommendations and proposals to the European Parliament to ensure the effective implementation of the strategy. Some of them are:

A major factor in environmental pollution is the widespread use of solid and liquid fuels such as coal, peat, heating oil, and solid biomass. These account for 21% of the energy mix for heating in Europe. The use of these fuels is associated with much higher pollutant emissions than those emitted by gaseous fuels or electricity. Solid and liquid fuels are used mainly in rural areas where there is no natural gas network.

Since households in remote areas account for 17% of the total number of dwellings in the EU, it is extremely important to focus efforts on improving environmental performance and access to alternative heating options tailored to the specific characteristics of rural areas.

Studies show that propane-butane vehicles produce 23% less greenhouse gas emissions than diesel and 21% less than gasoline. In the future, these benefits will increase significantly when the possibilities for propane-butane renewal are fully realized.

The team of us, as a member of Liquid Gas Europe, stands behind the proposals of the Association and will a8> work to increase the use of propane-butane in order to reduce harmful emissions.
