The widespread use of propane-butane as an alternative transport fuel will contribute to achieving the EU’s energy and climate targets.
We publish the main points of the position of the European LPG organization (Liquid Gas Europe) in connection with the Proposal for the regulation of alternative fuels infrastructure in the EU.
The European LPG industry is fully committed to achieving carbon neutrality in road transport by 2050. Propane-butane offers more environmental benefits than any other alternative fuel in Europe, thanks to its proven qualities. The carbon footprint of LPG is up to 23% lower than that of gasoline. Propane-butane has been proven to emit significantly less carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter compared to diesel.
From The European LPG Association insists on:
- Maintaining the scope of the definition of alternative fuels, including that of LPG, in order to comply with a technology-neutral approach. This will ensure that all alternative fuels and technologies are included in the decarbonization of the EU transport sector.
- Clearly defining alternative fuels such as bioLPG and rDME and recognizing them as renewable so that they can be taken into account in the decarbonization of the transport sector.
- Actions to achieve the EU’s energy and climate goals should take into account the social aspects of the energy transition.
- Ensuring consistency in legislation to promote the uptake of all alternative fuels in Europe.
According to the LPG organization, in order to ensure the rapid introduction of renewable fuels on the market of the EU in all sectors, it is important to ensure industry and citizens that the production and use of renewable fuels will be be supported in a long-term plan by government policies.
