We publish key points from the position of the Associations of the Renewable & Low-Carbon Liquid Fuels Value Chain) on the package of eco-measures proposed by the European Commission (Fit for 55 package). The plan aims to reduce carbon emissions in the EU by 55% by 2030. It contains numerous legislative proposals such as the reform of the EU Emissions Trading System, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the Renewable Energy Directive, etc.

Renewable and low-carbon liquid fuel associations consider the European Commission’s Fit For 55 plan to be a step in the right direction. However, they insist that the decisive contribution of renewable and low-carbon liquid fuels to the decarbonisation of transport and the achievement of the 2030 and 2050 targets should be given greater prominence.

The associations therefore insist that the revised proposal on standards for regulating CO2 emissions from motor vehicles should recognize the key role of renewable and low-carbon liquid fuels. This will ensure that all possible decarbonization technologies are taken into account.

Encouraging the widespread use of propane-butane and other sustainable low-carbon liquid fuels is essential for a rapid transition to zero-emission mobility. Consumers can rely on these fuels while Member States develop their infrastructure in line with the new measures and transport companies transform their businesses in line with the 2030 and 2050 climate targets.

The associations also believe that the Emissions Trading System (ETS) for road transport, together with the RED III and CO2 standards for vehicles, must be in line with the capabilities of both consumers and businesses.

We see a missed opportunity to support sustainable renewable fuels. We believe that leaving it up to Member States to decide whether or not to exempt renewable fuels from energy taxation will lead to a variety of fuel prices and a non-harmonized European fuel market,” the document further states.
