The European LPG Association (Liquid Gas Europe) has released a report entitled LPG Heating Incentive Policies Report 2021. The in-depth study provides guidance on the actions that governments can and should take to encourage the use of propane-butane for heating. The study covers markets and government policies affecting the transition to propane-butane in five countries: Chile, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The main highlights of the report are:
- Despite long-standing and continuous efforts to improve the energy efficiency of residential spaces, water heating systems, etc., due to global population growth, the demand for heating energy continues to grow dramatically.
- The environmental benefits of LPG provide a strong rationale for governments to support its widespread use for heating. On average, globally, the carbon intensity of propane-butane is approximately 70% lower than that of electricity. This means that switching premises from electricity or district heating to LPG leads to significant reductions in CO2 emissions.
- Governments in Chile, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States have already taken steps to encourage the use of propane-butane for domestic purposes. The most popular of these are tax breaks for domestic consumers of propane-butane.
- There is no universal approach to formulating and implementing government programs to promote the use of propane-butane for heating. Only through meaningful dialogue between institutions and stakeholders can an easily implementable and effective strategy be developed that meets the needs of the country concerned.
