In October 2019, the European LPG Association published a document on the organization’s vision for the development of autogas. a8> the vision of the organization for the development of autogas – Vision of Autogas. The topics that the material covers are a19> focused on the opportunities for promoting the benefits of using propane-butane.
The European LPG Association warns that despite the increase in the number of vehicles powered by alternative fuels, more than 90% of newly registered cars worldwide in 2018 use gasoline or diesel.
Harmful emissions from vehicles account for a quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Alternative fuels for transport can significantly reduce emissions. Autogas is the preferred solution because it is clean, efficient, and cost-effective. That is why the European Union is focusing its policies on promoting and enforcing its widespread use.
The European LPG Association’s vision for the results that can be achieved through increased use of autogas focuses on the following forecasts:
- Autogas will increasingly be used in combination with electric cars and hybrids. Thus, the use of propane-butane will not be at the expense of electric cars, but will actually optimize their use;
- With the right policies in place, the total number of autogas vehicles could reach a peak market share of 10.7% in 2040.
- The promotion of propane-butane in Europe leads to a significant reduction in harmful emissions – the benefits for the environment and society amount to €18.7 billion for the period 2020-2050.
The European LPG Association is pushing for the creation and enforcement of EU rules that would accelerate the widespread use of propane-butane; for strategies that include opportunities to replace old cars with new ones equipped with gas systems; and for other incentives for autogas consumers. These are just some of the measures that can be taken.
